What an insightful talk given by Dr. Meredith Rosenthal to Boston BoostHER members on the US heathcare system! Based on the essence of America being all about freedom of choice, choosing can be very complicated and outcomes are far from being optimal for patients. Health (incl. healthcare) is not a constitutional right and its price is market driven, thus mainly private. While the US has similar public spending as OECD countries, its private sector spending is triple. Yet, it does not translate into people living longer or better lives. Policy incentives are great for driving innovation, yet technology (devices or medicines) benefits the happy few and too many people are left behind… How to drive change? The American way, through incentives most probably!
